Nearly eight months ago, we witnessed Samsung’s former flagship smartphone Galaxy S3 getting shattered in a drop test, despite the fact that it was protected by Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass at the time. With Galaxy S4 incorporating Corning Gorilla Glass 3, it sustained minor scratch tests but coming to the main event, see how well the device performs in terms of robustness during a drop test conducted by AndroidAuthority.

As you can see from the video above, while the smartphone didn’t suffer from any cosmetic damage, the screen still got shattered upon high impact from the third drop, albeit it didn’t get shattered like Galaxy S3. Whereas on the other hand, the iPhone 5 with its highly improved build quality, suffered minor scuffs on its body but the display showed great resiliency as it remained unaffected by all drop impacts.

Considering the fact that iPhone 5 still uses the first-generation of Gorilla Glass, it’s quite evident that despite the toughness of Glass protecting the display, build quality matters a lot! Ever since Samsung revamped its smartphone design by including rounded corners starting with Galaxy S3, the device’s display has gotten more prone to damage upon drops. And with Galaxy S4 having narrower bezels, it has gotten even more sensitive.

Taking a look back at the drop test of Samsung’s Galaxy S2, which incorporated the first generation of Gorilla Glass,  the Korean Conglomerate deeply impressed its critics as the device sustained all drop impacts and no damage was done to the display. It looks like Samsung needs to stress on it design department of smartphones to make to make upcoming Galaxy smartphones more resilient to drop impacts. But in the meantime, don’t forget to buy a case for your Galaxy S4. Are you disappointed with Galaxy S4 drop test?
